Behavioral Patterns of Colobus in Logged and U nlogged Forests The Conservation Value of Harvested Forests

چکیده
Although tropical forests cover only 6% of Earth's arable surface, they account for nearly 50% of all known species (National Research Council, 1992). Despite this diversity, these systems are increasingly threatened, as exemplified by a recent Food and Agriculture Organization report (FAa, 1999) which indicates that tropical countries are losing 127,300 km2 of forest annually; this does not consider the vast area being selectively logged ("-'55,000 km2; FAa, 1990) or the forests degraded by fire (Laurance, 1999; Nepstad ct at., 1999;

Female red colobus monkeys maintain their densities through flexible feeding strategies in logged forests in Kibale National Park, Uganda.
Behavioral flexibility allows primates to cope with environmental variability. Quantifying primate responses to human habitat modifications allows an effective means of assessing coping mechanisms. Within Kibale National Park, Uganda, logging led to reduced primate food availability that still exists almost 50 years after the harvest. Following the predictions of the ideal free distribution the...
متن کاملThe value of unprotected habitat in conserving the critically endangered Tana River red colobus (Procolobus rufomitratus)
We determined the importance of unprotected forest habitat outside the Tana River Primate National Reserve (TRPNR), Kenya, in conserving the critically endangered Tana red colobus. We compared colobus and forest attributes inside and outside the reserve and found no significant difference in colobus density or mean group size, although absolute values for both measures were higher outside the r...

PRIMARY TROPICAL FORESTS ARE POWERhouses of biodiversity (1) but are rapidly declining in extent and are threatened even within some protected areas (2). As a result, non-primary forests, especially those that have been selectively logged, are becoming more important to conservation efforts. In the tropics, logging is almost always selective, targeting only certain commercially valuable tree sp...
متن کاملPopulation status of black and white colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza) in Kakamega Forest, Kenya: are they really on the decline?
INTRODUCTION Most primate populations today face ongoing habitat disturbance, yet not all species respond to disturbance the same way. While many primate species experience declines in population density when their habitats are disturbed, there are several that do not and these flexible species will generally require less conservation attention (Johns & Skorupa 1987; Cowlishaw & Dunbar 2000). C...
متن کاملStatus of Zanzibar Red Colobus and Sykes’s Monkeys in Two Coastal Forests in 2005
We censused two discrete subpopulations of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus (Procolobus kirkii) and sympatric Sykes’s monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis albogularis) between February 2004 and September 2005 in two coastal forests in Zanzibar, including the northernmost (Kiwengwa-Pongwe Forest) and some of the southernmost (Uzi and Vundwe Islands) extents of P. kirkii’s range. Surveys totalled 365 ...
